ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATE

I fell in love with the craft of building and design

Calvin’s architecture background started at The University of Minnesota where he earned a bachelor of science degree in architecture in 2020—just when jobs in the architecture field were scarce.

He took a position as a workshop manager, building and designing furniture and doing construction projects at a small architecture firm. “There,” he says, “I fell in love with the craft of building and design, passions I carried with me during a move to Portland in 2022.” In Portland, he worked as a designer at an architecture firm before moving to Olympia at the start of this year to work with us.

Calvin’s favorite part of his job is that it exists at the intersection of art, craft, and science. He grew up in an artistic household, knowing that he wanted to be in the creative industry. What he didn’t know is that he would find work that balances his desire for creativity with his interests in tech and science.

He’s especially excited to dip his toes into residential architectural design where he can learn the special art of collaborating with clients to create spaces that will be used and loved on a daily basis.

Calvin is a designer, through and through: he even designs and builds furniture in his free time, saying that it “gives me the opportunity to be experimental and wacky while also working with my hands.”
