Milk & Honey Nail Studio - Women Owned Business Feature

Meet one of our favorite women business owners, Karen Gonzalez of @milkhoneynailstudio Recently, we talked about how (and where) she rediscovered her artistic skills, why she works for herself, and what kind of client gives her free rein.

Artisans Group: What’s the story behind your artistry?

Karen Gonzalez: When I was younger I enjoyed art, but I didn't think I was good at it. As an adult, I took a drawing class in Italy with a friend. After the class she said, “It doesn't seem like you [ever] stopped drawing.”

AGAP: What was it like to start your own business?

KG: I've worked for different people and it’s worked out great but I always get to this point where I feel stagnant. I want to do things my way. When I set up my studio, I was still doing [nails] on the side. People would say, “You have your own business.” And I'm like, “No, I don't. I just do nails.” It took me a really long time to admit to myself that I was running a business. I’ve been full time since last September.

AGAP: What’s next?

KG: I don't know how big I want to grow the business or what my role will be. Right now, the girls that are working under me, their goal is to eventually be out on their own. And I'm happy about that. The nail industry is one of those places where you have to keep moving, otherwise you're going to feel stagnant. I think I'm a teacher right now. We'll figure out the next step when it gets there.

AGAP: Who do you serve?

KG: I gravitate towards people that are genuine and real…and people of all ages. One of my youngest clients is 18 and then I have clients that are 80. It’s nice to see all those perspectives, from every age.

AGAP: What’s your favorite service?

KG: Artist’s Choice, where I choose the designs. I do it for people that have been coming to me for a while because I know what they'll like based on their previous nail sets and their personality—some people are more edgy, some are more girly. [I’m] in the business for people and for building relationships.

We’re glad you’re making people’s nails gorgeous, Karen! To check out Milk & Honey’s work and to book or get on the waitlist, visit https://www.milkandhoneynailstudio.com/
