AGAP: What made you want to start this business, in particular?
MDV: I’ve always had a love for homes, design, and building — it was passed down to me through my family. My grandmother built a home in Alaska with a revered California architect that was featured in Sunset Magazine in the ‘70s. My mom designed and built every home I grew up in as a kid. It doesn’t surprise me that I was drawn to real estate, the tangible process of helping people find and create a home.
AGAP: How did you begin?
MDV: After a stint with City of Olympia, I knew I was ready for something more, something more autonomous, creative, challenging. I met with the top real estate agent in town and with the CEO of the brokerage and found out that they didn’t take part-time agents.
It was scary to leave the comfort of steady employment, but I also knew I didn’t want to work anywhere else. I called my husband and will never forget his words: “Let’s do it.” So I jumped into full time real estate and have never looked back.
AGAP: What experiences have been important or special as a woman entrepreneur in this community?
MDV: I’ve learned that authenticity in how I show up in my community is key. I support businesses I am passionate about and causes I align with. I don’t try to be everything to everyone but I do always try to be authentically me and show up as I am.
AGAP: What's one big success you're proud of?
MDV: Real estate is FULL of successes (and failures). There are so many highs and lows in this work. I know it might sound cheesy, but my client’s success IS my success. The success I’ve had is solely due to my clients. I love that I get to provide value, help, and support for one of the most important purchases of their lives.
