Helpful insight on general approaches to appliance selection applicable also to low-energy / zero energy home design. As described here, good choices come out of an integrated approach to systems and appliance selection.

Comment on The Coolest Awnings by Randy Foster

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the feedback. The support for the awnings was designed by our Structural Engineer, Carissa Farkus.

The steel rods above the awnings are attached to large eye-bolts that run through one of two framing members, depending on the location of the bolt. Most of the eye-bolts are installed in holes that are bored through the vertical, end chords of roof trusses. A few of them are installed in holes that are bored through 6 x 6 posts that run down into the walls. In both cases, blocking and/or large steel backing plates help spread out the point loads on the eye-bolts.

The ends of the awnings that touch the buildings land on ledgers that take the place of the siding, in the area where the awnings attach to the buildings. Each bolt along this attachment point runs through the ledgers, directly into studs or the end, vertical chords of trusses - again depending on the location of a specific bolt.

Looks terrific. What does it take inside the structure to support the awnings?
