Like many, we are moved and inspired by the architectural designs of the past, this creates the groundwork for where we are at today. Our portfolio includes a graphic range of styles from classic Arts and Crafts Bungalow to late 1800’s Italianate, to Mid-Century Modern. Despite the disparate styles, at the core they share essential similarities.

Fundamental guiding principles for the development of home building ideas and construction projects at The Artisans Group:

1. Sustainability

Passive House Institute United States or PHIUS, represent energy efficiency and construction standards developed by the PassivHaus Institute in Germany. These standards are simply the most rigorous standards by which to build a house in the industry today. When designing a Passive House, we use a proprietary software program,  developed by the Institute, that allows us to consider every aspect of energy use in the building, down to shadow lines on the windowsills! With this level of detail, a homeowner can expect a 75-90% reduction in monthly heating costs compared to a similarly sized code-built home. Additionally, the home requires no heating system and can literally be heated by the energy-efficient appliances and lighting within the home.

A dedicated Passive House may not be appropriate for every client, but we  employ the methods for extreme energy efficiency in all possible phases of design and development, respectful of budget and specific lifestyle needs.

2. Affordability

There are many approaches to building a home; costs will vary based on the approach chosen. Foremost, we consider quality to be non-negotiable. Quality design and craftsmanship pays back in many ways that you will continue to realize over the lifetime of your home. It’s often believed that building a high quality energy efficient home is cost prohibitive; we challenge this belief.

The building industry is changing at a rapid pace; there is more competition with product development now than ever before. For the consumer this means there are more materials choices at lower costs than that of the past. For every budget there are options to build your home green.

3. “Feel Good” Factor

In order for a home to truly be a home, it must “feel good” from the start of the project to move in day. It’s vital that you feel good about the sustainable building choices you’ve made along the way, the materials selections and how your hard-earned dollars were spent to create your dream. It’s equally vital that you feel a connection with the people that help you create that dream, that connection is what the entire project hinges upon.

Ultimately, you must love your finished home. Our designs are born of your ideas. We take your vision and add to it our sense of balance and integration. Every project has a unique signature based on the whole of the project. We study the site, the surrounding neighborhood, the history of the area, the path of the sun on the site, occupant habits and so on… in the end, it’s all part of what makes your home “feel good”…. “really good“.
