Affordable Kitchen Remodel

The other day a friend, we’ll call her “Mary”,  told me that she was bored with her kitchen, she said she wanted to do something with it, but couldn’t justify a “real kitchen remodel” as she put it. Mary’s kitchen is in mint mid-80’s condition. She doesn’t cook very often, but her kitchen is integral to the great room where all the action of life takes place. So, it’s visible… and boring.

As much as I’d love for The Artisans Group to design and build for her a fun, new kitchen, short of that, there is actually a lot Mary can do to immediately improve the look of her kitchen without a daunting investment, financially or time-wise.

Kitchen Pulls

First off… new cabinet pulls. Hands down, the most bang-for-her-buck with this one. Mary’s cabinets are nice raised panel maple with pulls in polished brass with little ceramic insets featuring mauve and teal flowers. This is a no-brainer. In Mary’s case, her house is in excellent shape over-all and in a desirable neighborhood with a fantastic view of Mt. Rainier out of her floor to ceiling great room windows.  Spending a little bit more on higher quality pulls seems to be in order. We carry the Atlas line at The Artisans Group, so I got her to go to their website to get some initial ideas of what might work for her.

Next, new paint. Another no-brainer. Currently sporting a classic satin egg-shell throughout leaves room for a feature wall. Nothing too aggressive in this case, but a soft warm  gold to take advantage of the morning sun coming in over Mt. Rainier.

Mary can stop here and  feel like she has a “new” kitchen.  However, I recommended to her that if she wanted to go one step further, updating her egg-shell formica counter tops would put the cherry on top.  She came in to the Design Center and picked out a dozen Formica, Wilsonart and Nevamar samples to live with for a week. (Side note: Call us to find out how ‘green’ these surfaces can be...)

I can hardly wait to see how it all turns out!
